The phenomenon of unaccompanied children fleeing to Europe is not new. But because many European countries have closed their borders, the associated risks have become extremely high.
The underage refugees mainly come from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Often, they have been on the road for months, even years. They are mostly boys. Their fathers are disabled, old or dead, and now they are the head of the family. Fleeing poverty and war, these children – and their families at home – have already pinned their hopes on Europe. But once they get there, the reality is not what they had hoped.
Shadow Game follows a couple of these youngsters: during their journey and in their countries of arrival. How does a child develop into a young adult under such extreme circumstances? How does your identity take shape when you have had to survive every day? And how do you adjust to your new home?
